Marion Unit 2 has been able to upgrade and expand facilities with money from state grants, bond sales, and the county sales tax; however, over the past decade, very little state monies have been available for books and instructional resources. All the while, curriculum costs are rising and technological advances are expanding.
Reduced state aid and the burden of paying down past deficits mean sufficient funds will not be available for books and curricular resources in the near future. As Marion Unit 2 aspires to be an educational leader, an investment in curriculum resources needs to start now.
Marion Unit 2 has developed new e-book and electronic resource initiative to address this need. The future goal of the district is to provide every student with an electronic device that will enable them to access and share educational experiences well beyond the classroom walls. During the current school year, we will launch this project by piloting several classrooms with a classroom set of Google Chromebooks. The Chromebook is a new inexpensive computer from Google that is simple, lightweight and easy to use. Students and teachers will use Chromebooks to access Google Apps for Education and other 21st Century digital curricular resources. These resources will enhance existing textbooks and expand learning opportunities for students.
Biking for Books is a project to help fund the purchase of Chromebooks and digital curriculum materials for as many classrooms and students as possible. School board member Wayne Tate will be biking 1,000 miles across Illinois to help raise funds and awareness as well as learn more about what other districts throughout Illinois are facing. Every dollar donated will fund this project.
Join us as we use technology to address growing curricular costs and to meet the learning needs of students.
